My aPPROACH to TRAINING
The goal of training is to achieve the desired outcome while being as minimally aversive as possible. We want to reduce risk, and keep our pets at a level where they feel safe to learn. As such, it is important that we adhere to the Code of Ethics set forth by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT*) and their Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA*) practices. LIMA principles emphasize the use of humane, evidence-based measures to achieve behavior change. We do not promote or condone the use of choke chains, e-collars, or other correctional methods and tools based on punishment to achieve results. Instead, we use scientifically-backed methods that promote better learning and a stronger bond between humans and their animal companions.
Not only is this approach kinder, but in recent years, the training community has recognized its effectiveness. Behaviors trained with positive reinforcement have a higher chance of lasting, and we don't ignore the important signals our pets communicate to us. For example, if your dog growls at a stranger and you respond by giving sharp yanks on their prong collar to correct them, you teach the dog to suppress these important warning signals. This suppression puts both the animal and the people around them at risk of conflict and even injury, as the dog may appear fine and then lash out without warning.
If we acknowledge that animals are living beings with emotions, then it's imperative to treat them with the respect they deserve.
